 First Word Ilayathalapathy Vijay and Prabhu Deva, the combo that gave us the blockbuster hit Pokkiri is back in action with Ayngaran International's Villu. As the title suggests, the movie is a fast-paced commercial entertainer targeting the mass audiences, especially Vijay fans. So, is it the Pongal treat that his loyal fans were waiting for? Keep reading... Who’s In It? After Tharani's Kuruvi, Ilayathalapathy Vijay returns to the silver screen with Villu. He does a dual role for the second time; Nayantara who was supposed to be his pair in Kuruvi plays his love interest in this movie directed by Prabhu Deva. The movie also has Prakashraj, Anantha Raj, Vadivelu, Ranjitha and Geetha. Devi Sri Prasad composes the music and Ravi Varman is the cinematographer. The movie has editing by Kola Baskar and stunts by FEFSI Vijayan. What’s It About? The story is inspired by Bobby Deol's Soldier which was released nearly a decade back. Vijay plays an affectionate son who seeks revenge on the men who were responsible for the death of his father. Major Saravanan (Vijay), an honest army officer, was on the verge of capturing three army officials involved in trading of weapons and ammunitions to terrorists and drug lords, but was brutally murdered by them. The men framed him as a terrorist and stripped off the medals and commendations from his dead body just before his last rites. Saravanan's dead body was left to rot in the sun since the villagers refused to cremate him in their neighbourhood. He is survived by his wife (Ranjitha) and his only son Pughal (Vijay) who then plans and takes revenge on the murderers and removes out the terrorist image from the name of his patriotic father. The Performances This movie with an outdated story is completely shouldered by Vijay's screen presence and music by Devi Sri Prasad. Vijay impresses with his style and mannerisms. As usual, Vijay rocks in the dance department to, drawing huge applause. As Janvi, Nayantara, the dream girl of many a youth today, never fails to sizzle on screen with her seductive costumes. Vadivelu, who was very successful in his comedy track with Vijay in Pokkiri has delivered a below-average performance. Prakashraj and Anantha Raj have nothing much to do except to show villainous faces and keep challenging the hero to death. Geetha and Ranjitha are just part of the cast. Technical aspects Ayngaran International, who had given a stylish look for Ajith in Billa and Aegan, do the same to Vijay in Villu. The cinematography and costumes are excellent. Stunts deserve special mention. Final Verdict Villu is a movie for purely satisfying Vijay fans, a commercial entertainer for the B & C audience. But, at a time where audiences have started appreciating movies like Poo, Vaaranam Aayiram and Abhiyum Naanum, a script like Villu is really regressing by taking audiences back to the 80's where movies where based on exaggerated sentiments. Let's hope Vijay chooses better scripts in the years to come and gives us movies like Poove Unagagha, Kushi and Priyamanavale. Villu - Made for Vijay Fans!
